Salisbury Fire Station, built in 1964, is Wiltshire Fire Brigade's largest fire station. Its 999 turnout area covers some 125 square miles and the number of operational firefighters/staff employed tops 80, crewing a variety of Fire and Special Appliances.

The Station Ground shares its borders with Hampshire and the New Forest National Park to the south and east, Dorset to the south-west, Amesbury with Salisbury Plain and its Military Bases to the north, and Wilton's Station Ground to the west.

Salisbury is the only Whole-time Shift Fire Station in south-east Wiltshire, surrounded by and helping to serve the many Retained stations of 'Area 3' and beyond, where firefighters respond from work or home. Salisbury also hosts 3 Defence Fire Stations in its area, inclucing Boscombe Down Airfield, Porton Down Research Establishment and Middle Wallop (Army Air Corps) on its Hampshire Border towards Andover.

Surrounded by a spider's web of major Roads, including the A303 to the north, major rail links and three airfields, there is plenty to keep the Emergency Support Unit busy. Much of the Station Ground is rural, but Salisbury (sometimes refered to as the City of New Sarum) has a medieval 'chequered' City Centre, with a fine 13th Century Cathedral and it's famous 404 Spire and Walled Close. The City is built upon 5 Rivers and is overlooked from the north by the privious ancient hill fort Old Sarum. The area is rich in Wessex History, is less then 10 miles from Stonehenge and has many fine country estates, stately homes and castles, Clarendon, Longford and Wilton.

Charity work has always been close to the hearts of many Firefighters, and is believed to be part of their compassionate nature, involved with the type of work they do around emergency incidents. Perhaps seeing at first hand trauma, human endevour and spirit to overcome crisis. Salisbury has a proud history of Charity work over many years. Being a large Fire Station situated in a progressive community, with a large catchment area, it has been successful in a number of areas of Cummunity and Charity Work. This also includes several sporting events, that have developed from local initiatives to even gaining National standing.

At the core, but not exclusive, is the work and events carried out on behalf of the Fire Services own Charity, The Fire Fighters Charity. From Fire Station Open Days, which allow large numbers of the general public to see at first-hand the Firefighters in role, to Car Boot Sales and a series of Road Races, the Community can visit and participate in events held at the Station. Over the years tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for many good causes with often ideas from individual Firefighters, growing into projects that attract support from far afield.

Since 1983 the Station personnel have made a Three Peaks Mountain Challenge into the largest Fire Services sporting event in the UK. In Nov 1988 the Station was the collecting site for the South's BBC Children-in-Need Appeal. In the same year Michael Eilphick ('Boon'), opened the annual Charity Open day with 7,000 people attending. In the following years Roy Castle even filmed 'Record Breakers' from the Station.

Firefighters have also gone off-station in support of a variety of charities and through usually some form of sporting challenges, have enjoyed team work and community involvement. Just some of the many events include Boat-a-thons, Row-a-thons, Skate-a-thons, Swim-a-thons, Tri-athlons, Canoe Races, Raft Races, Road Races, Dances, Balls, Quiz nights, Car washes, tug-of-war and even Human Table-Football. With Fire Appliances, the Station and it's Firefighters have also attended, upon requests, many other community and chariy events, from School and Village Fetes, Cuckoo Fairs, Flower and Motor Shows, Salisbury Arts Festivals, Hospital Carnival processions, Firework Displays and many more.
